Social skills training in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology: students' perception

ABSTRACT Purpose: to investigate the perception of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (SLPA) students, submitted a Social Skills Training (SST) program, regarding potentialities, difficulties perceived gains in their social skills (SS) repertoire. Methods: this qualitative study included 22 students (between 19 21 years old), enrolled 2nd year undergraduate SLPA course. The SST structure was based on theoretical-informative practical-experiential methodology, developed over 15 meetings, using different teaching strategies. Content analysis applied assess responses questionnaire with five open ended questions about SS program itself, administered at beginning, middle end training. Results: greater difficulty observed for relation public speaking as well empathetic assertive toward peers professors. participants highlighted importance professional-patient relationship professional training, training expands competences beyond technical knowledge, self-knowledge having central role process. Conclusion: preparation clinical practice can be used promising teaching-learning methodology curricula courses.
